The Royal Academy of Art has chosen a piece of art by Yasmin Gill (OH 2017) for its Summer Exhibition 2022.

Yasmin left Habs in 2017 and went on to study Fine Art at Newcastle University, graduating in 2021 with first class honours. She hopes to study for a masters' degree in art therapy, and has gained work experience as a teaching assistant at an autistic school in Newcastle.

She is currently working part-time as a support worker at a care home for people with complex mental health needs while she plans her art career. Even with her busy schedule, she finds time to play Ultimate Frisbee in her spare time and will be competing in the World Ultimate Club Championships in Ohio, Cincinnati, this July.

"The application process for the RA Summer Exhibition was relatively easy," Yasmin wrote in a message to Sarah Deamer, her art teacher at Habs,."I submitted a piece of art that fitted the general theme, paid a fee of £25, and needed a little bit of luck! The piece I submitted is called ‘Between Flames’ and I painted it in my first year of university back in 2018. It is acrylic, acrylic pouring medium and silicon on metal.

"After submitting the piece to the RA Summer Exhibition website, there was a long wait to find out whether I had been shortlisted for the final round of judging," she continued. "Being shortlisted alone was an exciting experience as it means having to carefully pack up your artwork and take it, in person, to Burlington House for it to be judged by the artistic panel.  Once handed in, I got an email to say shortlisted applicants would find out if they were selected for the exhibition on 1st June. This was a long six weeks wait, but thankfully it paid off and my work will be exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, alongside many other talented artists, from 21st June-21st August 2022".

We wish Yasmin well in her future career in art and look forward to hearing more from this talented artist.
